Eastvale is a flat, built-out suburban city at low wildfire risk and is not generally mapped as a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, so the statewide 100-foot defensible-space mandate applies mainly to wildland-adjacent parcels near the Santa Ana River bottom. Citywide, overgrown weeds and dry brush are abated as a public nuisance under the Eastvale Municipal Code.
Eastvale sits on former dairy land in the Chino/Santa Ana River valley and is described by the City as a lower-wildfire-risk community due to newer fire-rated construction and modern building codes. Most of the city is not in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, so California's strict 100-foot defensible-space law (Government Code 51182 / Public Resources Code 4291) applies primarily to properties adjacent to wildland such as the Santa Ana River bottom, where the City and CAL FIRE are working to reduce dry fuel. Where defensible space does apply, CAL FIRE guidance organizes it into Zone 0 (0-5 ft, ember-resistant), Zone 1 (5-30 ft, lean and green) and Zone 2 (30-100 ft, reduced fuel), including mowing annual grass to a maximum 4-inch height. Citywide, overgrown vegetation, dead weeds, and accumulated combustible debris are handled as a property-maintenance/public-nuisance matter under the Eastvale Municipal Code (nuisance abatement, Chapter 8.18). The City's Community Enhancement & Safety (Code Enforcement) team inspects for weed/brush overgrowth and can order abatement, after which the City may abate and lien the cost to the property.
Failure to clear weeds or brush after a City nuisance-abatement notice can result in code-enforcement citations and City-performed abatement with costs assessed as a lien against the property. For wildland-adjacent parcels subject to PRC 4291 defensible space, CAL FIRE non-compliance penalties can reach up to $20,000 per violation under state law.
