Kent requires property owners to abate fire hazards from dry vegetation and debris, especially on East Hill slopes and valley-wall parcels near wildland-urban interface zones.
Kent City Code Title 8 on nuisances and Title 13 fire provisions require owners to keep vegetation from becoming a fire hazard. The Puget Sound Regional Fire Authority may order abatement when dry grass, brush, or accumulated yard debris creates an ignition risk near structures, especially on slopes above the valley floor or adjacent to greenbelts. Owners typically must remove dead vegetation within 30 feet of any dwelling, trim limbs 6 to 10 feet up on mature trees near structures, and clear gutters and roofs of needles and leaves. Critical areas such as stream buffers and wetlands impose limits on removal, so owners must review the Kent Critical Areas ordinance before clearing near regulated features. Noncompliance can trigger abatement with costs liened against the property. Chipper programs and Firewise consultations are available through the Regional Fire Authority.
