Dunedin permits small recreational fires and fire pits in backyards under the Florida Fire Prevention Code adopted by Chapter 38, with attendance, setback, and fuel requirements applied citywide.
Dunedin's Chapter 38, Fire Prevention and Protection, adopts the Florida Fire Prevention Code, which incorporates NFPA 1 standards on open flames. Under those standards, recreational fires are limited to a pile no larger than three feet in diameter and two feet high, must be kept at least 25 feet from any structure or combustible material, and must be constantly attended by a competent person with a means of extinguishment. Portable outdoor fireplaces and chimineas must be at least 15 feet from structures. Only seasoned firewood or charcoal may be burned, never trash, leaves, or yard waste. Pinellas County's complementary open burning rules also apply within the city.
Code enforcement may issue citations and order immediate extinguishment; fire department response and reignition during burn bans can lead to escalating municipal fines.
