Tarpon Springs adopts the Florida Fire Prevention Code through Chapter 7. Recreational fires and portable outdoor fireplaces must follow NFPA 1 setbacks, fuel limits, and supervision requirements, with Tarpon Springs Fire Rescue authorized to order extinguishment when smoke or sparks become a nuisance.
Chapter 7 of the Tarpon Springs Code adopts the Florida Fire Prevention Code, which incorporates NFPA 1 standards for recreational and ceremonial fires. Recreational fires using clean, dry firewood are generally limited to a 3-foot pile and must remain at least 25 feet from any structure or combustible material, while portable outdoor fireplaces (chimineas, manufactured fire pits) require a 15-foot setback. Fires must be constantly attended by a competent adult with a hose, bucket, or extinguisher available. Burning of yard waste, garbage, leaves, or treated wood is not permitted. Tarpon Springs Fire Rescue can order any fire extinguished if it produces excessive smoke or threatens safety.
Violators face code enforcement citations under Chapter 7 plus immediate extinguishment orders; repeat or hazardous burning may trigger civil fines and cost recovery for fire response.
