Killeen, TX Fire Regulations: Fire Pits & Backyard Fires (2026)

Section 11-62 of the Killeen Code amends the International Fire Code, 2024 Edition, as adopted locally. , and the fire department must be notified both before the fire is lit and once it is out or extinguished. 2 requires a permit from the code official before kindling a fire for land development, silvicultural or range or wildlife management practices, disease or pest control, or a bonfire; a permit is also required for land clearing, farming or agricultural burning, which is allowed only on tracts zoned A (agricultural) or A-R1 (agricultural single-family residential), and only the landowner may apply.

4 sets the location standard for open burning generally: the burn site cannot be less than 300 feet from any structure, and the person burning must take steps to keep the fire from spreading within 300 feet of a structure. Because the ordinance does not carve out a separate, looser standard for a small recreational fire pit, any open flame outside a chimney or approved appliance is governed by these open-burning rules on timing, notification and the 300-foot structure setback. 2.
