San Diego permits recreational fires under SDMC Chapter 5, Article 11 (Fire Code). Fires in approved containers must be at least 15 feet from structures; open recreational fires (max 3 ft diameter, 2 ft height) require 25 feet clearance. Must be constantly attended with extinguishing equipment available.
Under the San Diego Fire Code (SDMC Ch. 5, Art. 11), recreational fires are defined as outdoor fires not in an incinerator, outdoor fireplace, or barbecue, with a total fuel area of 3 feet or less in diameter and 2 feet or less in height. Open recreational fires require a minimum 25-foot clearance from any structure or combustible material. Fires in approved containers (manufactured fire pits, chimineas) require a minimum 15-foot clearance from structures. All recreational fires must be constantly attended while burning. A fire extinguisher, garden hose, or other extinguishing equipment (dirt, sand, water barrel) must be immediately available. Fires must not produce offensive smoke or odors. During Red Flag warnings or high fire danger conditions, all open fires may be prohibited by the Fire Chief.
