Bozeman bans fireworks. Under Ordinance 2134 (adopted May 2, 2023, effective June 2, 2023), the sale and discharge of fireworks is prohibited within Bozeman city limits and in county enclaves surrounded by the city. The only exception is handheld sparklers, which must be magnesium-free and no longer than 12 inches.
Bozeman City Commission adopted Ordinance 2134 on May 2, 2023, prohibiting both the sale and the discharge of fireworks within the city limits of Bozeman, and prohibiting discharge in county enclaves (county properties wholly surrounded by the city) without a permit. The ordinance was driven by wildfire risk in the rapidly growing Gallatin Valley and by noise concerns. The single carve-out is for handheld sparklers, and even those are restricted: a permitted sparkler must be magnesium-free and may not exceed 12 inches in length. All other consumer fireworks - including firecrackers, Roman candles, aerials, and mortars - are illegal to sell or set off inside the city. Bozeman Police have publicly stated they enforce the ban, including around the July 4 and New Year's holidays. Note that fireworks purchased legally at county stands outside the city may still not be discharged once you cross into Bozeman city limits.
Discharging or selling fireworks in violation of Ordinance 2134 is a misdemeanor: the fireworks are subject to confiscation, and on conviction the violator faces a fine of up to $500. Enforcement is handled by the Bozeman Police Department.
