Possessing, storing, using, or selling fireworks is unlawful throughout the consolidated City of Baton Rouge / Parish of East Baton Rouge. Only permitted public pyrotechnic displays are allowed. Louisiana law lets local governments prohibit fireworks, and Baton Rouge does.
City-Parish Code sec. 13:1005 ("Possession or sale of pyrotechnics") makes it unlawful for any person to have, keep, store, use, manufacture, sell, handle, or transport pyrotechnics anywhere within the city-parish. The only carve-out is a supervised public display for which the chief of police or sheriff has issued a permit. The Baton Rouge Fire Department confirms fireworks are illegal parish-wide, including in the cities of Baker, Zachary, and Central. Louisiana Revised Statute 51:650 governs the manufacture and sale of fireworks statewide, but expressly allows parishes and municipalities to prohibit them locally, which is what happens here.
Guilty of a misdemeanor: a fine of not more than $500, imprisonment up to six months, or both. Officers may confiscate fireworks on the spot.
