Consumer fireworks are legal in South Carolina. Anyone 16 or older may buy, store, and set off state-approved 1.4G consumer fireworks. Greenville County has no countywide ban, but a property owner can file a Fireworks Prohibited Zone, and burn bans or HOA rules may still apply.
South Carolina is a permissive state. Retail sale, storage, and use of consumer (1.4G) fireworks are legal statewide and regulated under SC Code Title 23, Chapter 35 and Title 40, Chapter 56 (Board of Pyrotechnic Safety). Fireworks may not be sold to anyone under sixteen. Greenville County does not impose a general discharge ban, but under SC Code 23-35-175 an owner, lessee, or managing authority of real property may create a 'Fireworks Prohibited Zone' by filing a Discharge of Fireworks Prohibited Agreement with the local law-enforcement agency and posting signs. Explosive fireworks like M-80s and cherry bombs remain illegal (23-35-130). Always check for an active Forestry Commission burn ban.
Discharging in a posted prohibited zone or violating Chapter 35 is punishable, for a first offense, by a fine of not more than two hundred dollars or imprisonment for not more than thirty days (SC Code 23-35-150).
