Consumer fireworks are legal in Dorchester County. South Carolina permits their sale and use statewide, so unincorporated residents may buy and shoot them. Retailers need a state license, and no fireworks may be sold to anyone under sixteen.
South Carolina is one of the most permissive fireworks states, and Dorchester County cannot ban consumer fireworks in its unincorporated areas. Sale is regulated, not prohibited: under S.C. Code 40-56-35 a seller must hold a license from the State Board of Pyrotechnic Safety, and S.C. Code 40-56-220 bars selling fireworks to anyone under the age of sixteen. Buyers 16 and older may purchase legally, and roadside stands are common along US 78 and I-26. There is a real local wrinkle: S.C. Code 23-35-175 lets a county, municipality, or property owners' association forbid discharge within a defined zone by posting notice, so many Summerville subdivisions ban them and towns may limit discharge hours.
Selling fireworks without a Board license, or to someone under sixteen, is a misdemeanor. Discharging fireworks inside a posted no-discharge zone under S.C. Code 23-35-175 is a violation carrying fines.
