Since 2022, Ohio lets residents discharge 1.4G consumer fireworks on private property on set statutory days (July 3-5, the surrounding weekends, New Year's, Memorial and Labor Day weekends, and more). But any township or city may restrict the dates/times or ban discharge entirely.
Ohio is not a blanket 'legal' state. ORC 3743.45 permits 1.4G consumer fireworks on named days, but ORC 3743.45(D) gives every county (unincorporated area), township, and municipality the power to restrict or fully ban discharge by resolution or ordinance. Canton chose NOT to opt out and follows the state list (July 3-5, plus the weekends before/after, 4 p.m.-11 p.m.). Several other Stark County townships have adopted bans. Always confirm your specific township or city before lighting anything. Property-owner permission is required, and a township ban prevails over a conflicting county resolution.
Discharging where your township/city has opted out, or outside statutory days, is a misdemeanor. Reckless use causing injury or fire brings higher charges plus civil liability.
