Michigan's Fireworks Safety Act lets your city or township restrict when consumer fireworks are used, but it cannot ban them on state-designated days after 11 a.m. โ including December 31, and June 29 through July 4. Kent County itself sets no fireworks rule; check your local ordinance.
The Michigan Fireworks Safety Act (Act 256 of 2011), amended by Act 635 of 2018, preempts local fireworks rules. A city or township may regulate the hours consumer fireworks are ignited, but may not prohibit them on the statutory designated days after 11 a.m.: December 31 until 1 a.m. January 1; the Saturday and Sunday before Memorial Day and Labor Day; June 29 to July 4; and July 5 if a Friday or Saturday โ each until 11:45 p.m. Grand Rapids and most Kent County townships have adopted local hour ordinances mirroring these limits.
A local fireworks ordinance must impose a civil fine of $1,000 per violation and no other sanction; $500 of each fine goes to the enforcing local police agency.
