Macon County, IL Fire Regulations: Fireworks (2026)

Chapter 97 of the Macon County Code governs fireworks in unincorporated Macon County, meaning sites outside the corporate limits of Decatur, Forsyth, Mt. Zion, Maroa, and the county's other municipalities, each of which regulates fireworks within its own limits. 03 makes it unlawful for any person to knowingly possess, offer for sale, expose for sale, sell at retail, use, explode, or cause the explosion of any fireworks unless a permit has been granted under the chapter or state law otherwise allows it. 02(B) separately prohibits manufacturing fireworks anywhere in the county.

06. Applications must be filed in writing at least 15 days before the display, are processed by the County Clerk for a fee tied to actual administrative cost, and are not transferable or extendable beyond the dates listed. A pyrotechnic or consumer display permit additionally requires at least $1,000,000 in occurrence-based liability insurance, identification of a licensed lead operator and any assistants who must be at least 18, and a pre-event site inspection and sign-off from the fire chief covering that location. Consumer fireworks displays must be conducted at least 200 feet from spectators, buildings, structures, and property lines, and be free of overhead obstructions. 08 authorizes the fire official to seize any fireworks stocked, offered, or held in violation of the chapter, at the owner's expense.
