Louisiana allows consumer (1.4G) fireworks under La. R.S. 51:651 et seq., subject to State Fire Marshal regulation. In Lafayette Parish, possessing, using, selling, or igniting fireworks is illegal within the city limits of Lafayette and the other incorporated municipalities (Broussard, Carencro, Duson, Scott, Youngsville). Fireworks may only be used in unincorporated Lafayette Parish during a tightly defined window: June 25 through July 5 from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., extending until 1 a.m. on July 5. Minors under 18 cannot possess or buy fireworks.
La. R.S. 51:650 defines 'consumer fireworks' (1.4G) as small retail devices with limited explosive content - aerial devices contain 130 mg or less of flash powder; ground devices 50 mg or less. La. R.S. 51:651 et seq. authorizes consumer-fireworks sale and use, regulated by the Office of the State Fire Marshal. Within the City of Lafayette and the parish's other incorporated municipalities (Broussard, Carencro, Duson, Scott, Youngsville), possession, sale, use, handling, or ignition of fireworks is prohibited under municipal ordinance. In unincorporated Lafayette Parish, consumer fireworks may be used only from June 25 through July 5 between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m., with use allowed until 1:00 a.m. on July 5. Devices must be detonated at least 200 feet from any structure, vehicle, or rubbish. Persons under 18 are prohibited from possessing, handling, or purchasing fireworks. Aerial fireworks not meeting the 1.4G consumer-fireworks definition (display fireworks 1.3G) require a licensed pyrotechnic operator under La. R.S. 51:650. The Lafayette Fire Department and Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office enforce within their respective jurisdictions; the State Fire Marshal enforces statewide licensing of sellers. Violations within municipal limits are a misdemeanor handled by Lafayette City Court.
Possessing, using, selling, or igniting fireworks within the city limits of Lafayette, Broussard, Carencro, Duson, Scott, or Youngsville is a misdemeanor punishable by fines and confiscation. In unincorporated Lafayette Parish, use outside the June 25-July 5 window or by minors under 18 is a violation enforced by the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office. Sale without a State Fire Marshal license is a separate state violation under La. R.S. 51:651 et seq.
