Full Breakdown
Lafayette City-Parish Consolidated Government's Property Maintenance Code (Sec. 26-284) requires smoke alarms in existing one- and two-family homes, apartments, and assisted-living occupancies: on every level, in each sleeping area, and in every room along the path from a bedroom to the exit. Multiple alarms in one unit must be interconnected so one sounding triggers all. Alarms need hardwired power with battery backup, except battery-only units are allowed where no construction is underway. Owners must replace units within 10 years of the manufacture date. The building official enforces this citywide, in both the City of Lafayette and the unincorporated parish.
Violations & Fines
Failure to install or maintain required smoke alarms is a Property Maintenance Code violation; the building official can order repairs and, where the lapse creates an imminent hazard, order the unit vacated until corrected.
