Outdoor burning rules in Clackamas County, OR — also called the burn ban, open burning, or fire restriction ordinance — set when you can burn yard waste, debris, or run a recreational fire.
In Clackamas Fire District's coverage area, backyard yard-debris burning is allowed only during two seasons — March 1–June 15 and October 1–December 15 — on approved days, outside the DEQ burn-ban boundary. No special permit is required, but you must call the daily burn line.
Backyard burning is limited to yard debris, trimmings and clippings (dried where practical); garbage, plastic, rubber and petroleum-treated materials are prohibited. Piles may be no larger than 10'x10'x10', a maximum of two piles may burn at once, and each must sit at least 50 feet from any structure or combustible. Burning is banned inside the DEQ Burn Ban Boundary — check the burn-restriction map. The Fire Marshal's Office no longer issues Special Burn Permits, so residents rely on the daily burn message line (503.742.2945) for approved days and hours; all fires must be out by the fires-out time. Complaints go to Oregon DEQ, not 911.
Illegal burning or out-of-boundary burning is reported to Oregon DEQ (888.997.7888); violators face DEQ civil penalties and liability for any escaped fire.
