East Honolulu homeowners storing propane for cooking, pool heaters, or backup generators must comply with Honolulu's Fire Code LP-Gas provisions, including permits and plan review for larger containers.
ROH Chapter 20 adopts NFPA 1 Chapter 69, which incorporates NFPA 58 LP-Gas Code. Permits are required for installations under NFPA 1 Sec. 69.1.2. Any single container or aggregate installation with a water capacity of 125 gallons or greater triggers plan submittal to the AHJ. Tanks located within 10 feet of public vehicular ways require vehicular-barrier protection such as bollards. Setbacks, clearances, and hose/cylinder connection standards apply to common Hawaii Kai pool and outdoor-kitchen setups. Homeowners are also responsible for preventing tampering and ensuring cylinders are upright and ventilated.
Non-compliant installations can be red-tagged, and owners may face Fire Code penalties and insurance impact.
