City-specific rules exist: Tampa has its own propane storage rules that differ from Hillsborough County's county-level regulations. If you live in Tampa, check the city-specific page instead.

Mechanical equipment, such as air conditioning units, pumps, heating equipment, propane tanks, electrical generators and similar installations, may not project into the required front yard(s), but may project five feet into the required rear yard(s), and three feet or no more than 50 percent of the required side yard(s), whichever is more restrictive.

Full Breakdown

Sec. 6.01.03.I.3 classifies propane tanks with air conditioning units, pumps, heating equipment and generators as mechanical equipment. Such equipment cannot project into a required front yard at all. It can project up to 5 feet into a required rear yard, and up to 3 feet or 50 percent of the required side yard, whichever is more restrictive. The rule governs placement relative to yard setback lines, not tank capacity or fire-safety clearance, which fall under the Florida Fire Prevention Code and NFPA 58.

Violations & Fines

Installing a propane tank in a required front yard, or beyond the permitted rear/side yard intrusion, is a zoning violation; the county can require the tank relocated to a compliant location.
