Under the Minnesota State Fire Code, propane cylinders must be stored outdoors at least 10 feet from building openings such as windows, doors and fresh-air intakes. In apartments of three or more units, storing propane or grills on balconies is prohibited where Appendix O is adopted.
Minnesota's State Fire Marshal applies the State Fire Code (based on the International Fire Code) to LP-gas cylinder storage. Propane cylinders shall be stored outside at least 10 feet from building openings such as windows and doors and any fresh air intakes. For multi-family buildings that adopt Appendix O, no person shall store or use any fuel, barbecue, torch, or similar device on balconies above ground level or ground-floor patios within 15 feet of the structure. Single-family homes have more flexibility, but cylinders should still be stored upright, outdoors and away from ignition sources and building openings. Check with your city fire marshal, since local adoption varies.
Improper LP-gas storage can be ordered corrected by the fire marshal; violations of adopted fire-code provisions in multi-family buildings can bring citations and removal of the fuel or grill.
