McLean County, IL Fire Regulations: Propane Storage (2026)

Under McLean County Code § 350-43W(11), the Flammable Liquid Storage standard for manufactured home parks, the county prohibits supplying each manufactured home individually from its own fuel oil or propane gas storage tank. Any fuel oil or gas storage serving the park must instead be centrally located in underground tanks set a safe distance from any manufactured home site. All fuel lines running to the park and to individual manufactured home sites must be installed underground and designed to conform to any applicable state code.

Where separate gas meters are installed for individual units, each meter must be located in a uniform manner across the park so inspectors and utility crews can locate them consistently. This standard sits inside the broader manufactured home park regulations of § 350-43W, which also require the park to maintain fire-extinguishing equipment in good working order, of a type, size and number sufficient to satisfy McLean County's State Fire Marshal regulations, and to keep solid waste in enclosed structures with prohibited incinerators. The rule applies only within the unincorporated area of McLean County that the county's zoning ordinance governs; Bloomington and Normal enforce their own separate municipal codes for propane storage inside city limits.

A park operator who installs individual tanks instead of a centralized underground system is out of compliance with the manufactured home park use standards enforced by the McLean County Department of Building and Zoning.
