Riverside Fire Department enforces California Fire Code limits on propane cylinder size, location, and quantity at homes and businesses. Cylinders must be stored outdoors, upright, away from ignition sources and exits.
Riverside adopts the California Fire Code Chapter 61 governing liquefied petroleum gas. Residential properties may keep cylinders up to 20 pounds without permit, but larger tanks require setback from buildings, ignition sources, and property lines. Indoor storage of propane is prohibited except for cylinders one pound or less. Cylinders must remain upright on noncombustible surfaces, with valves protected and shutoff visible. Apartment balconies are restricted in number and size. Multifamily and commercial sites need RFD permits for tanks above threshold quantities and must mark storage with NFPA placards.
Indoor propane storage above one pound and unpermitted bulk tanks are misdemeanors with fines up to 1,000 dollars and orders to remove fuel.
