Coverage is unit-wide: a mounted alarm in each story of the dwelling, in basements, and in every bedroom or other room used for sleeping, not just a single hallway unit.

The City Manager's Code Compliance staff check for working alarms during the periodic rental inspections required under § 5-9 before issuing or renewing a rental license, and during the exterior/interior inspections authorized under § 5-10 for other buildings. A missing or dead alarm found during either inspection is cited as a housing code violation under § 5-13, not a separate fire-code charge. Property owners who receive a notice of violation have 15 days to request a hearing before the Administrative Review Board under § 5-14; filing does not automatically stay the City Manager's order unless he grants a stay for good cause.
