Deer Park requires smoke detectors in all residential dwellings per the International Residential Code as adopted by the city. Detectors must be installed in each bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the home including the basement.
The City of Deer Park adopts the International Residential Code which mandates smoke alarms in all new and existing residential dwellings. Smoke alarms must be installed inside each bedroom, in the immediate vicinity outside each sleeping area, and on every level of the dwelling including basements. In new construction, smoke alarms must be hardwired with battery backup and interconnected so that activation of one alarm sounds all alarms in the dwelling. Battery-operated smoke alarms are acceptable in existing homes that have not been substantially renovated. Carbon monoxide detectors are required in dwellings with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages per the International Residential Code. Alarms must be listed and labeled per UL 217 for smoke alarms and UL 2034 for carbon monoxide alarms. The Deer Park Fire Marshal's office enforces smoke detector requirements during inspections. Contact the Fire Department at (281) 478-7281.
Failure to maintain working smoke detectors may result in code violation notices. Landlords who fail to provide working smoke detectors in rental properties may face fines and are liable for damages under Texas Property Code Section 92.2611.
