Summit County, OH Fire Regulations: Smoke Detectors (2026)

Ohio Revised Code 3781.104 requires each dwelling unit to have board-approved smoke detector devices installed in the immediate vicinity of, but outside, all sleeping rooms, with alarm signals clearly audible in every bedroom when intervening doors are closed. The Residential Code of Ohio requires smoke alarms in new and substantially altered one- and two-family homes inside each sleeping room, outside each sleeping area, and on every level. In rentals, Ohio landlord-tenant law makes the landlord responsible for providing and maintaining working alarms, while tenants must give written notice of any missing or malfunctioning detector. Local fire codes may add point-of-sale or permit-triggered alarm requirements.
