Sunnyvale enforces the California Building Code and State Health and Safety Code requiring working smoke alarms in every bedroom, hallway, and level of a home. Detectors must be hardwired in new construction.
Sunnyvale adopts California Building Code Section R314 and Health and Safety Code Section 13113.7 requiring smoke alarms in every sleeping room, in hallways outside sleeping areas, and on every level including basements. New construction and major remodels require hardwired interconnected alarms with battery backup. Existing homes sold or rented after July 1, 2014 must have alarms meeting the 10-year sealed battery standard under California SB 745. Carbon monoxide alarms are also required in any home with a fuel-burning appliance or attached garage. The Sunnyvale Fire Services Division inspects during point-of-sale and rental inspections and responds to complaints from tenants about missing or non-functional alarms.
