Temple Terrace enforces the Florida Building Code and FL ยง553.883 requiring smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of all dwellings. New and substantially renovated homes require hardwired interconnected alarms with battery backup; existing homes at minimum need 10-year sealed-battery units.
FL ยง553.883 (updated 2014) mandates 10-year sealed lithium battery smoke alarms when replacing units in existing dwellings lacking hardwired systems. FL Building Code Residential Section R314 governs new construction: AC-powered, interconnected, with battery backup, in each sleeping room, outside sleeping areas, and on each story including basements. Short-term rentals, ADUs, and remodels triggering permit review must upgrade to code. Temple Terrace Fire Department offers free smoke alarm checks and installation through community-risk programs.
Missing or inoperable alarms discovered during inspection: correction order and reinspection. STR violations can suspend BTR. Building permits will not close without compliant alarms.
