Iron County, UT Fire Regulations: Wildfire Zones (2026)

Section 8.24.010 adopts the International Urban Wildland Interface (WUI) Code as Iron County's minimum wildfire-zone standard, including the amendments set out in Utah Administrative Code R652-122, as currently written or as later amended by the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire, and State Lands, unless the county specifically excepts a provision by its own amendment. The code operates as the county's baseline for wildland fire risk across its building and zoning chapters: Section 17.33's solar power plant standards, Section 17.34's wind energy standards, Section 17.35's geothermal power plant standards, and Section 17.37's data center standards each require the project to provide a defensible space for fire protection in accordance with the Iron County Wildland-Urban Interface Code.

Chapter 16.25's seasonal subdivision rules go further, requiring proposed subdivisions to meet WUI Code fire prevention, protection, and suppression requirements, including survivable space and fire-resistant building materials and vegetation identified by the county fire warden, and requiring subdivisions of eight or more lots to provide an accessible fire suppression water source sized as the fire warden determines, with smaller subdivisions able to substitute a fire warden-approved vegetation management plan. Compliance is checked through the building permit process administered by the Iron County building department, with the county fire warden advising on suppression water, turnouts, and vegetation clearance.
