Gordon County, GA Garage & Yard Sales: Frequency, Duration & Permits (2026)

Section 5.03.07 of the Gordon County Unified Land Development Code sets the frequency and duration limits for yard and garage sales in unincorporated Gordon County, Georgia. Sales are allowed within any rural or residential zoning district, subject to three standards. Each sale is limited to a three day consecutive period. Each sale shall take place no more than four times a year. Sales shall not be permitted as a home occupation.

The three day cap counts consecutive days, so a Friday, Saturday and Sunday sale uses one of the four annual slots, and a sale that runs into a fourth consecutive day exceeds the limit. Four sales a year works out to a maximum of twelve sale days on one property in a year. The section prints no permit and no fee for the sale itself, so the limits are the whole rule.

The home occupation clause matters for anyone who resells goods regularly. A household that turns a garage sale into a standing weekly business cannot rely on the home occupation route, because the code says sales shall not be permitted as a home occupation.

The signs that advertise a sale have their own limits in Section 5.04.04(K) of the same code. One sign with a maximum area of eight square feet is permitted on the property on which the sale is conducted, and it must be removed within twenty-four hours of the close of the sale. Section 5.04.04(J) allows temporary curb-type signs in all zoning districts from 3:00 p.m. on Friday to 11:59 p.m. on Sunday only, not exceeding four square feet in area and three feet in height, one such sign conveying the same message every three hundred feet along a roadway, on private property with the property owner's consent. Those curb-type signs cannot be placed on trees, utility poles, fences, other existing objects or structures, or in public rights-of-way. Section 5.04.02(E) separately prohibits signs erected or maintained upon trees or utility poles.
