Skokie does not require a permit for residential garage sales, but sales are limited in number, duration, and must follow signage restrictions. Commercial-scale sales or regular recurring sales require business licenses.
The Village of Skokie allows residential garage sales (also called yard sales or rummage sales) without a permit, subject to limits codified in the Village Code. Residents may typically hold up to three garage sales per calendar year, with each sale not exceeding three consecutive days. Sales must be conducted on the property itself β not in yards, parkways, or public rights-of-way β and merchandise must be personal household items. No commercial or newly-purchased merchandise is permitted. Temporary signs may be posted on the property but are prohibited on utility poles, Village signs, traffic signs, and other public property. Signs must be removed within 24 hours after the sale ends. Operating outside these parameters may require a business license or special event permit.
Exceeding sale limits or sign violations: $75-$500 per violation. Unlicensed commercial sales: $500-$1,500 plus cease-and-desist orders.
