Livonia residents may operate a cottage food business under the Michigan Cottage Food Law (MCL 289.4105) to sell non-hazardous homemade foods directly to consumers up to 25,000 dollars per year.
Michigans Cottage Food Law (Public Act 113 of 2010, codified at MCL 289.4102 and 289.4105) allows individuals to produce and sell certain non-potentially hazardous foods (baked goods, jams, jellies, dry mixes, candy, vinegars, and similar shelf-stable items) from an unlicensed home kitchen. Annual gross sales are capped at 25,000 dollars effective 2017 and subsequent amendments. Products must be sold directly to the end consumer at farmers markets, roadside stands, home pickup, or similar direct channels; sales to restaurants, grocery stores, or online shipping across state lines are not allowed. Labels must include the producers name and address, ingredients, allergens, net weight, and a Made in a home kitchen that has not been inspected by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development disclaimer. In Livonia, cottage food sales from the home must still respect the home occupation no-customer-traffic and no-signage rules; farmers market sales are the cleanest path.
