Section 4.10.180(A)(7) of the county zoning ordinance lets a Home Occupation: General post one non-illuminated sign, capped at one square foot, to identify the business. The larger 'Expanded' home occupation category, available on lots of one acre or more, gets a bigger allowance, one non-illuminated sign up to four square feet, kept out of the front-yard setback and any street right-of-way. Both categories bar illuminated or backlit signage entirely. The rule applies only in the unincorporated county; the fifteen cities inside Santa Clara County, including San Jose and Palo Alto, set their own home-business sign standards.
