Home-based businesses in Antioch are prohibited from any exterior signage identifying the business under AMC Chapter 9-5.3303(D). No window signs, yard signs, vehicle signage parked in driveway, or illumination advertising the business is allowed. The residence must appear outwardly as a residence.
Antioch's Home Occupation standards under Municipal Code Chapter 9-5.3303 strictly prohibit any exterior evidence of the business, including signage. The intent is to preserve the residential character of neighborhoods. Specifically, no sign advertising the business may be displayed on the exterior of the home, in yards, or in windows visible from the street; no illuminated or electronic signs are permitted; and no banners, flags, or temporary signs identifying the business are allowed. Commercial vehicles with permanent business graphics parked in the driveway may be deemed 'signage' by code enforcement if they are the primary means of advertising and are parked conspicuously for extended periods; one commercial vehicle under 1-ton rating used by a resident is generally permitted to park on-site. House-numbering required by the Fire Code is of course exempt. Address directional signs for delivery drivers are generally acceptable as long as they do not include the business name. Violations of the signage prohibition are typically enforced via warning followed by administrative citation ($100-$500 per day), and can also trigger revocation of the Home Occupation Permit. Online advertising, business cards, and commercial listings in directories are fully permitted - the restriction applies only to on-site exterior advertising. Sandwich boards, A-frame signs, and feather flags are likewise prohibited in residential zones for home businesses. Special events (occasional home-based sales, limited to frequency established under garage-sale rules) are separately regulated.
