Hayward prohibits signs advertising home occupations in residential zones. The business must remain invisible from the public right-of-way.
Under Hayward Municipal Code home occupation standards, no signs, displays, or exterior evidence of the business may be visible from the public right-of-way or adjacent properties. The residence must continue to appear as a single-family home. This includes a prohibition on painted wall signs, yard signs, A-frame signs, vehicle wraps parked on the street for advertising purposes, and illuminated window displays. Small interior window graphics that are not intended to be read from the street are permitted. Vehicle identification lettering is allowed on a company vehicle parked on the property as long as the vehicle is of normal size and used by the resident for transportation. This rule is designed to preserve the residential character of Hayward neighborhoods; commercial signage is reserved for properties in commercial and mixed-use zones.
