Hayward allows temporary political signs on private property with size and time limits, consistent with First Amendment protections and state campaign rules.
Hayward Municipal Code permits temporary political and noncommercial signs on private residential property without a permit, subject to reasonable size, placement, and time restrictions. Residential political signs are generally limited to a maximum total sign face per lot, with an individual sign usually capped around six square feet. Signs may be posted during the active campaign period and must be removed within about ten days after the election. Placement in the public right of way, on utility poles, in medians, on traffic signs, or on other public property is prohibited. Signs may not obstruct sight distance at driveways or intersections, block sidewalks, or be illuminated in a way that creates glare. Commercial and multi-tenant properties may have additional constraints through the sign code. The City does not regulate sign content beyond time, place, and manner requirements, consistent with the First Amendment.
