Hayward defines "Freeway Frontage" as any business or property within 600 feet of Interstate 880 or State Route 92 (west of Industrial Boulevard) that provides food, lodging or fuel to freeway users, or that forms part of a commercial center of at least four acres with an approved Master Sign Program, per Sec. 800. A "Freeway-Oriented Sign" is any sign designed to be visible from either freeway. Sec. 502(b) is explicit that the sign must advertise the business occupying the property where it stands; off-premise freeway signage is banned.
Qualifying businesses get one freestanding or monument sign, up to 50 feet high, sized at 100 square feet per face and 200 square feet total including the extra freeway-facing panel. Wall signs on freeway frontage cannot rise higher than the building wall carrying them.
