Full Breakdown

201 that makes it unlawful to erect any non-exempt sign without one. The tradeoff for that exemption is a tight size and placement limit: each sign must be non-illuminated and stay under four square feet. Only one sign is allowed on the actual garage or yard sale property. Homeowners may post up to four additional directional signs, complete with arrows and instructions, on other private properties, but only on weekends and holidays and only with that property owner's permission. 200(A)(1)-(2). The seller must remove every sign within one day of the sale date; leaving one up longer converts it into an illegal sign.

711, the Development Services Director or a designee can remove or order removal of a sign maintained in violation of Article 7, following the abatement procedure in Chapter 5, Article 7 (Community Preservation and Improvement). 714 makes a violation of the sign article an infraction or misdemeanor under Chapter 1, Article 3 of the Municipal Code, and the City can still pursue a civil nuisance abatement action separately from any criminal citation.

Violations & Fines

Signs left on public property such as sidewalks, medians or utility poles, more than one on-site sign, more than four off-site directional signs, or signs left up beyond one day after the sale can be removed by the Development Services Director under Section 10-7.711's abatement procedure (Chapter 5, Article 7). A violation of Article 7 is charged as an infraction or misdemeanor per Section 10-7.714.
