Hayward allows temporary garage sale signs on private property during the sale, but prohibits posting on utility poles, trees, and other public infrastructure.
Residents hosting a garage sale in Hayward may post a limited number of temporary signs on their own property and, with the owner's permission, on other private property. Signs must be posted no earlier than the day before the sale begins and removed within 24 hours after the sale ends. Each sign should be no larger than about six square feet, placed so it does not obstruct sidewalks or sight lines at intersections and driveways, and may not be illuminated. The Municipal Code and the California Outdoor Advertising Act prohibit attaching signs to utility poles, street signs, traffic control devices, trees in the public right of way, medians, or public buildings. Hayward Code Enforcement and Public Works routinely remove illegally posted temporary signs and may issue citations to the person named on the sign, regardless of who posted it.
