Hayward residents receive weekly solid waste, recycling, and organics collection through Waste Management of Alameda County under a franchise agreement with the City.
Hayward Municipal Code Chapter 6 and the City's exclusive franchise with Waste Management of Alameda County govern trash collection. Every occupied residence must subscribe to service; self-haul is not a substitute. Service includes a weekly gray landfill cart, a blue recycling cart, and a green organics cart for food scraps and yard waste, consistent with California SB 1383 organics requirements. Carts must be placed at the curb by the scheduled start of service and removed from public view by the end of the collection day. Carts may not block sidewalks, bike lanes, or ADA access. Cart sizes range from 20 to 96 gallons, and rates are tiered based on the gray cart size to encourage recycling and diversion. Overfilled or overweight carts may be skipped. Hazardous waste, electronics, and batteries are not accepted in curbside carts and must go to the Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste facility.
