Hayward follows California AB 341, AB 1826, and SB 1383, requiring residents and businesses to separate recyclables and organics from the landfill stream.
Hayward residents and businesses must separate recyclable materials and organic waste from landfill trash to comply with California AB 341 (mandatory commercial recycling), AB 1826 (commercial organics), and SB 1383 (statewide organics diversion). The blue cart accepts paper, cardboard, glass bottles, metal cans, and clean rigid plastics numbered 1, 2, and 5 in most cases. The green organics cart accepts food scraps, food-soiled paper, and yard trimmings. Contamination such as plastic bags, greasy pizza boxes, or hazardous materials in the recycling or organics carts can cause loads to be reclassified as trash and subject the generator to contamination fees. Businesses and multifamily properties with five or more units must provide on-site recycling and organics collection, edible food recovery where applicable, and employee training. The City inspects properties and issues notices of violation with escalating fines for noncompliance.
