Milwaukee home occupations are prohibited from displaying exterior business signs. Only an address number and one small nameplate up to 2 square feet are permitted.
Milwaukee Code Chapter 295 regulates home occupations and prohibits any exterior commercial signage. A nameplate identifying the occupant (not the business) up to 2 square feet is allowed flush-mounted to the dwelling. Illuminated signs, sandwich boards, banners, flags, and window decals advertising the business are all prohibited. Vehicles with permanent business lettering may be parked overnight at the residence but cannot be used as mobile billboards. Violations trigger immediate Chapter 295 enforcement by the Department of Neighborhood Services.
Unauthorized home business signage is a $100 to $500 violation per day. Continued display may escalate to home occupation revocation.
