In the unincorporated towns under county zoning, a sign is defined as a structure or device on which advertising is displayed or by which attention is directed to advertising. Because a home occupation must stay incidental to residential use with no external alteration changing the residential character of the building, large or illuminated business signs are generally not permitted at homes. For certain approved conditional uses, town ordinances allow one lighted sign no more than twenty-four (24) square feet, lit only during business hours. Cities and villages set their own sign codes.
