Lake County, CA Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Sec. 3(j)(6) sets the sign allowance for every home occupation permitted under the county's home occupation standard. Only one sign is allowed per home business, and it must be non-illuminated: no internally lit, backlit or neon signage is permitted regardless of district. Where the parcel sits in the R1 or R2 zoning district, or on an SR-zoned lot smaller than one acre, that single sign cannot exceed one square foot in area, and it must be mounted flat against the wall of the dwelling or on the face of a fence, meaning freestanding or pole-mounted signs are not an option in those districts.

In other zoning districts where home occupations are permitted, such as Rural Lands or Agricultural-zoned parcels, the sign allowance nearly doubles to two square feet in area, and the sign may be located anywhere on the parcel rather than being restricted to the dwelling wall or fence face. This sign rule sits inside the same home occupation package that also governs where the business may operate, staffing, deliveries and vehicle use, and it applies on top of, not instead of, the general sign standards in Article 45 for any other signage on the property unrelated to the home occupation.
