Wayne County, NC Home Business: Signage Rules (2026)

Wayne County Zoning Ordinance § 53(C) keeps a home-based business from changing the outward look of the property: no alterations to the building or premises are allowed except a single nonilluminated identification sign capped at three square feet. 2(a)(2), in the ordinance's sign article, repeats the same limit for home occupation signs in residential districts, confirming the cap applies countywide wherever a home occupation is permitted. Because the sign has to be nonilluminated, floodlighting or internally lit cabinet signs used elsewhere in the code for commercial signage are off the table for a home business; the county's general illumination standard in § 99 also bars any exterior light source that shines directly onto a neighboring property or the public right-of-way.

The sign limit sits alongside the rest of § 53's conditions: the home must remain principally a dwelling, only one outside worker is permitted, and any accessory building used for the occupation is capped at 25 percent of the dwelling's floor area and needs a Special Use Permit. Signs meeting the § 53(C) limit do not need a separate sign permit under § 92, since Section 91 exempts small identification signs from the county's general sign permitting requirement.
