Reno's Municipal Code makes it unlawful to camp on public property within 350 feet of the Truckee River's shore anywhere inside city limits, the zone the ordinance calls the Truckee River Corridor, unless the camper holds a permit under Section 8.23.075. Camping covers sleeping, storing belongings overnight, cooking or building fires outside designated pits, and using a tent, shelter or vehicle for sleeping between a half hour after sunset and sunrise. The ban exempts medical emergencies, people using wheelchairs or walkers, permitted vendors, and permitted parades or events. No one can be cited unless a law enforcement officer first warns them that their conduct violates the section; a violation is a misdemeanor.
