Hackensack requires property owners to keep grass and weeds cut so vegetation does not exceed ten inches in height. The property maintenance chapter applies to all residential and commercial lots within city limits.
Under the Hackensack Code, exterior property areas must be kept free from overgrown weeds and grass. Vegetation taller than ten inches is presumed a nuisance subject to abatement. The Property Maintenance Officer or Code Enforcement may issue a notice of violation requiring the owner to cut and remove the growth within a specified period, typically ten days. If the owner fails to comply, the city may enter the property, perform the cutting, and assess the cost as a municipal lien against the property in addition to fines. Vacant lots, rental properties, and commercial sites are inspected proactively during growing season.
Failure to comply may result in fines, city-performed abatement billed to the owner, and a municipal lien recorded against the property.
