Hackensack prohibits the growth of noxious weeds, brush, and uncontrolled vegetation on private property. The city may cut and remove weeds at the owner's expense if the owner fails to comply with notices.
The property maintenance chapter declares overgrown weeds, brush, ragweed, and other noxious vegetation a public nuisance. Owners must keep yards, vacant lots, and rear areas free of such growth. Code enforcement personnel may inspect and serve a written notice to abate. Owners typically have ten days to comply. If the owner fails, the city contracts removal and bills the owner; unpaid amounts become liens added to the next tax bill. Persistent non-compliance can lead to escalating fines under the general penalty provisions. The ordinance applies year-round but is most actively enforced from spring through early fall.
Notices of violation, daily fines, city-performed abatement billed to the owner, and tax liens may be imposed for ongoing weed nuisances.
