Hackensack, NJ Parking Rules: Snow Removal Parking Rules (2026)

Section 170-25 creates an automatic, weather-triggered parking ban rather than a fixed calendar season: as soon as snow accumulation covers the street or highway, no vehicle may be parked on either side of any street or part of a street listed in Schedule XVII of Chapter 170. The prohibition does not lift the moment snow stops falling; under Subsection B it continues until the streets have been plowed sufficiently that parked vehicles would not interfere with the normal flow of traffic, giving Public Works time to clear the enumerated snow routes before parking resumes.

Section 170-26 gives the Chief of Police, or the ranking officer in the Chief's absence, separate authority to declare a parking emergency for any reason that threatens the free flow of traffic, not just snow, including accidents, fires and public celebrations, and to direct that temporary emergency no-parking signs be posted on affected streets or sections of streets. Once posted, no parking is permitted where those signs appear, and the city must notify the operator or owner of any vehicle already parked there before the signs went up.

Section 170-27 backs both provisions with a removal power: any unoccupied vehicle parked in violation is deemed a nuisance and traffic menace, and any peace officer may have it towed, with the owner responsible for reasonable towing and storage costs before reclaiming it. Under § 170-28, all of this depends on the required signage actually being erected; the restriction is not enforceable on a street where the emergency or snow-route signs are missing.
