Hackensack, NJ Parking Rules: Street Parking Limits (2026)

Section 170-6, last amended through Ordinance No. 11-2025, lists the specific places and positions where parking is banned citywide: in parks or playgrounds outside authorized recreational hours and marked spaces; anywhere other than within the painted lines marking a permissible space; in a zone posted with a temporary emergency no-parking sign; on a sidewalk or the sidewalk portion of a driveway, unless a police officer directs otherwise; and, most commonly cited, in front of any public or private driveway, blocking a resident's or business's access.

The same section requires every parallel-parked vehicle to face the same direction as moving traffic on that side of the street, which bars the common wrong-way parking violation, unless a law enforcement officer directs otherwise. Subsection B separately forbids parking a vehicle for the purpose of selling it, cleaning it, or, outside an emergency, repairing it on a public street. Subsection D targets space-squatting: no one may reserve or try to reserve a public parking space, block a vehicle from parking through their presence in the roadway or hand signals, or use a box, can, crate, hand-cart, dolly or other device, including unauthorized pavement or curb markings, to hold a space open. A. 39:4-138 and other state statutes; the more restrictive rule always controls.
