Hackensack, NJ Parking Rules: Preferential Parking Districts (2026)

Section 170-71 bars parking on the enumerated streets in Subsection E during the designated hours unless the vehicle belongs to a resident of that specific block and displays a valid residential parking permit on its left rear window, or is an emergency, public utility, contractor, service or delivery vehicle present only while performing work in the area. Residents may also call the Police Department's nonemergency line, (201) 646-7777, to request advance permission for a visiting guest, and the department will ordinarily grant it unless traffic or parking conditions make it impractical.

Permits are issued only by written application to the Police Department. An applicant must be a bona fide resident of the enumerated street, documented by a deed, lease or utility bill, and the applicant's New Jersey driver's license and vehicle registration must match that address, with the vehicle registered in New Jersey. No more than one vehicle per licensed driver may receive a permit. College students attending a Hackensack institution who are not permanent residents can qualify for a permit by providing a lease naming them as a tenant, proof of enrollment, proof of vehicle ownership, and a valid school email address; that permit expires 30 days after graduation or disenrollment unless the student becomes a bona fide City resident.

Section 170-71C separately bars copying, counterfeiting, displaying a known-fraudulent permit, submitting false documentation, or transferring a permit decal to another vehicle. Holding a permit does not excuse a resident from any other traffic or parking law in the area.
