Hackensack, NJ Fence Regulations: Height Limits (2026)

3G sets fence and wall heights for residential districts and for multifamily uses in all districts. Fences of any solidness level up to six feet are permitted along rear and side property lines, and no closer to any street frontage than the rear building line of the principal building; a front-yard fence is allowed only where the dwelling sits adjacent to or across the street from a business or manufacturing zone or existing commercial or industrial use. Semi-open and open fences up to four feet are permitted anywhere within the property lines, but no fence other than a perimeter fence may stand within 10 feet of the front lot line.

Fences may exceed six feet only to conform to sloped ground, provided 80% of the fence stays at or under six feet, and decorative posts may rise no more than six inches above the fence top. Corner lots carry an added safety rule: any fence within 15 feet of a street intersection must be an open fence topped at no more than four feet above grade, to preserve sight lines. Freestanding walls, including brick and masonry, are capped at four feet along any property line except where a retaining wall is permitted. 3H, up to seven feet generally and 14 feet around public land, schools, and utilities.
