North Miami requires all property owners to maintain their lawns mowed to an aesthetically pleasing height not exceeding 8 inches under Chapter 12 (Nuisances). This requirement extends to public right-of-way areas including swales and alleyways adjacent to the property. Properties must also be free of trash, litter, and debris.
Chapter 12 of the North Miami Code of Ordinances establishes that lawns must be mowed to an aesthetically pleasing height not exceeding 8 inches. This standard applies to the entire property including front, side, and rear yards, as well as public right-of-way areas such as swales (the grassy strip between sidewalk and street) and alleyways adjacent to the property. Property owners are responsible for maintaining these areas even though they are technically public right-of-way. In addition to grass height, properties must be kept free of trash, litter, and debris. The Code Compliance Department proactively patrols for violations and also responds to complaints. Per Florida law effective July 1, 2021, code enforcement officers cannot initiate investigations based on anonymous complaints; the complainant must provide their name and address. The city's objective is to achieve voluntary compliance by educating residents who may inadvertently violate ordinances.
Violations receive a Notice of Violation with a compliance deadline. Failure to comply may result in the city performing the work and placing a lien on the property. Fines escalate for repeat violations. Report overgrown properties to Code Compliance at (305) 895-9825.
